Halloween
HALLOWEEN
Author : ADVIK SINHA
Hello
readers!!
Just
watching the movie Annabelle creation “Spooky right?”. Thinking about spooky
did you know what is special about October 31st? It’s Halloween!!! YAAAY!
In this
blog I will tell you about what Halloween is and why and how it is celebrated,
The word
Halloween basically comes from the word "hallowed" and
"eve", hallowed eve as in holy eve. Halloween was first celebrated by
the Celtic people who lived in Ireland 2000 years ago. They believed that the
spirits of the dead roamed the towns and villages on the night of October 31st
before their new year 1st November. The Celts feared that these spirits could
create chaos by damaging crops, creating sickness, and even possessing over the
bodies of the people. To protect them from these dangers, the Celts made huge
bonfires and dressed in animal hides to frighten away the evil spirits. They
also carved faces on turnips and throwed them in a way that they followed them
to their houses for the good spirits. Afterwards the Americans changed it from
turnips to pumpkins.
These
carved lanterns are known as Jack o’-Lanterns. There is a very interesting
story behind the name “Jack-o’-Lanterns.
Once
there was a man named Stingy Jack he was a miser and a selfish guy. He loved to
play tricks on people and one evening he called the devil himself to have
dinner with him. Being a miser he refused to pay for the dinner after they were
done eating, so he somehow tricked the devil into turning into a coin to pay
for the dinner, when the devil transformed he decided not to pay the coin and
instead kept it in his pocket along with a holy cross which prevented the devil
into transforming back. When he eventually released the devil he made him
promise to not bother him for a whole year.
The next
year when the devil came back Jack again convinced him to climb the tree to
retrieve a fruit instead he carved the cross on the tree to prevent the devil
from coming back down. This time when he released him Jack made the devil
promise to him that he would not disturb him for 10 years and he would not
claim him after his death.
Soon
after Jack died but the Gods denied his entry into heaven and the devil had
promised not to claim him into hell. The devil left Jack with a piece of coal
to light his way. Jack put the burning piece of coal in a carved turnip lantern
and roamed around the land.
Since
then those carved turnips which later became pumpkins were known as “Jack of
the lantern” or simply “Jack o’-Lanterns”.
Isn’t it
an amazing story. Now, I will start preparing for my virtual Halloween party and
you should to!.
