Slum Life Of Mumbai
Slum Life Of Mumbai
Author : MEHAR SACHDEVA
Slumdog movie has inspired me to search more about slum life. The slums have become the indispensable and dark side of our country. 52% of Mumbai population lives in Slum areas. Dharavi is Asia's largest slums locality in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Mumbai’s slums occupy 12 percent of its total geographic area and up to a quarter of the available construction area in the city.
Dharavi has an area of just over 2.1 square kilometers and a population of about 1,000,000. With a population density of over 277,136/km², Dharavi is one of the most heavily populated areas in the world. The life expectancy of people living around the theses slum areas lingers at 39 years, as against an urban life expectancy of 73.5 years in the state.
Mumbai’s 12.4 million citizens send9000 metric tons of waste to this 134-hectare dumping ground every day. The poor infrastructure of slum communities in Mumbai affect other alarming issues, particularly the access to water, overcrowding, and spread of illness amongst residents.
Each person accessed to less than 20 liters of water per day, which is under the bare minimum utilization level needed for basic hygiene. Unclean water causes diarrheal diseases in children and increases their mortality rate.
Most slum houses do not have individual toilets and taps. Residents have to pay to use community toilets which are rarely maintained and buy overpriced water from vendors. Some78 percent of community toilets in Mumbai’s slums lack water supply and 58 percent have no electricity. Many slum houses do not have proper doors.
While the living conditions in Mumbai slums are unbelievable and unimaginable. Much more attention should be given to providing adequate services to people who live there, they should also be provided with shelter and employment to millions of migrants who hope for better lives in the city.
