Who doesn’t love kite-flying ? Flying kites is the most delightful experience in itself. The joy of letting the winds fly our crafts . Spreading awareness matters and is the first step in making Sankranti safe for birds and animals.
Well, it’s the month of Sankranti which marks the end of winter and beginning of warmer and longer days. Fun to fly and beautiful to watch, kite flying has always been a major part of the Sankranti celebrations. Little did we know that these colourful & light framed kites could harm the lives of our feathered friends, the birds ?
Every January kites in hundreds of colours fill the skies in India, particularly Rajasthan and Gujarat and Maharashtra. Everyone gather on terraces to watch fighter kites battling for supremacy. The sharper the string is the better chance of cutting the competitor's kite and winning. Flying high in the sky at the end of a long string made using a strong combination of threads, coated with powdered glass (Manja), kites cause a major threat to the birds in the sky. This is the season when birds from different countries migrate to India and make their nesting grounds. They fly quite high and can come into direct contact with the kites. Failing to notice the fine thread while flying, thousands of birds get tangled causing mutilation of wings, fractures, and even nerve injuries or get killed. To the hapless birds in the sky, the thread comes from nowhere and slices through their bodies. Also after the kite flying is done, coils of this sharp threads are found hanging on trees and lamp posts, which is hazard for birds .
Enjoy the Sankranti festival but we should remember to save birds. My sincere appeal to all my readers that please avoid kite flying, if not possible please take necessary precautions where the birds safety is taken care and there is no harm to their lives. Keep first aid box ready, keep handy the emergency help line numbers like the Fire bridage and NGO to rescue the injured birds.
