Why Education Is Given More Importance Than Sports

John F. Kennedy had once said that, intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong.

But does our education system emphasize participation of young students in sports? Is a child given an equal opportunity to hone his skills in the sport he desires?

Well, sadly the answer to both these questions is NO.

It is considered, that Academic achievement is important for the successful development of young people in society. And because of this mind-set, children are not given the exposure to explore various games that interest them. Many times they are compelled to give up a sport to take out more time for their studies.

Though, I totally agree that academics, plays a crucial role in shaping a child’s future. But the success of one’s bright future cannot be solely decided by marks and the acquisition of degrees. Sports, can be equally advantageous for the holistic development of an individual.

The stress on academics is so much that it pressurizes the child to perform. Sometimes, even beyond their capabilities. This not only makes them avoid studying but also hinders their growth.

Many times, rote learning is encouraged, jointly by teachers and parents, so that the child gets better grades. But this restricts acquiring knowledge and limits the understanding of the concepts. Besides, too much time spent on academics can also make a child a couch potato. The famous proverb, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy holds true here.

On the other hand, playing sports can be immensely beneficial to a young mind. A number of studies have shown that sport plays a therapeutic role in physical fitness, has a positive influence on physical self-worth and improves self-esteem.

Moreover, Games and sports teach students to co-operate with another and achieve success in life. While playing games like football or basketball a child learns how to play and work in a team. This aspect develops a sense of team spirit and strong relations with others as well.

Besides that, Sports help children become mentally tough. Being able to focus on goals and to take the steps to accomplish them makes students more strong mentally and is a valuable trait.

Last but not the least, playing Sports helps in improving memory skills. It enables an individual to stay focused and works on improving their concentration. Games like, table tennis, chess, badminton are good examples. This in turn will improve the grades in school.

Many famous sports persons who were mediocre in studies, have made their career in sports and have been successful too. For instance, we all know Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble. Both these Indian Cricketers were pursuing Chartered Accountancy and Engineering respectively but dropped their academics mid-way to pursue their passion and achieved a lot of success, even beyond their initial expectations.

Therefore, when sports can be so invaluable in the overall development of an individual, then why should it less important than academics?
