DEAD SEA - A Natural Wonder
The wonders of nature are endless. One such wonder that I came across in one of my family vacations was when we went to Jordan two years back. It's been two years but I still cannot get over the beauty, tranquility and the absolute miracle of nature called the Dead Sea. My fascination made me curious to find more and here are some facts I found.
- The Dead Sea’s shores and surface are the lowest point on earth which is 423 meters (1,388ft) below sea
- Although it is called The Dead Sea, it is not a sea really, it is saltwater It is part of the long border of Jordan and Israel.
- The salt concentration of the Dead Sea is around is 9.6 times saltier than the
- Because of its extreme salinity, no living organism can thrive in its
- The dead sea spits out asphalt almost constantly. Egypt used to import this asphalt, in ancient times as it was used for
- The average temperature in this area is 88 F or 31 C.
Isn’t it wonderful? But here is a cause of concern. The Dead Sea today has been drying up for decades and losing water at an alarming rate. For the last few years, the dead sea has been heavily mined for minerals like potassium. The miners separate the water into pools and let the water evaporate leaving the desired materials behind. But it is not only the mining which is the reason. The dams cut off the source of the natural supply of water such as the Degania dam, etc which has been evaporating at the rate of about a meter per year. The Red Sea-Dead Sea pipeline plan is giving a slim Ray of hope for the existence of the Dead Sea. I wish something can be worked out to control this catastrophe.
Because I want to relive the experience of reading a book floating on the surface of the Dead sea, collect the smooth stones, get soaked in the rejuvenating mud, and sink in the natural beauty. It is so true that the only thing more miraculous than the wonders of nature is our awareness of the wonders of nature.
