Discrimination is that situation where any person does not get equal opportunities and rights and it exists because of cultural differences, geographical differences, and gender differences.
In India we predominately face lot of gender discrimination, it is the situation in which people are treated differently simply because they are male or female, rather than based on their individual skills or capabilities. Even in the 21stcentury, across globe men and women do not enjoy equal privileges.
Girls in our society are often cornered and are desisted from getting equal rights as boys. Girls usually get lesser opportunity in terms of higher education, decision-making roles, and leadership roles.
Below mentioned are several indexes to measure gender equality
- Gender-Related Development Index (GDI)- GDI is a gender centric measure of Human Development Index.
- Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM)- This portion includes much detail characteristics like the percentage of seats than women candidates hold in national parliament, percentage of women at economic decision-making role, the income share of female employees.
- Gender Equity Index (GEI) - GEI ranks countries on three parameters of gender inequality, those are education, economic participation, and empowerment. However, GEI ignores the health parameter.
- Global Gender Gap Index - This index focuses more on identifying the level of female disadvantage. The four important areas that the index considers are economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, political empowerment, health, and survival rate.
As per the World Economic Forum’s gender gap ranking, India stands at rank 108 out of 149 countries. This rank is a major concern as it highlights the immense gap in opportunities in women with comparison to men.Dowry system in marriage contribute a lot towards gender discrimination.
