The Dark Origins Of Disney Movies

Disney movies have lots of good life lessons, they teach us about love, living your life to the fullest, marching to the beat of your own drum and most importantly, following your dreams. But you’d surprised to know that most of these Disney movies have been tweaked since their origin stories come from a place of darkness. Did you know that in the original story of frozen, Elsa was portrayed as a villain and in the original version of Ariel, Ursula demands not only Ariel’s voice but her tongue as well? Today, I’m going to tell you all about the dark origin stories of some of these fairy tales. So, let’s dive right in.

  1. Frozen: -

Frozen is the most successful animated film of all time. While audiences might have fallen in love with Elsa, the misunderstood girl who had no one to talk to, the original story was very different. In the original fairy-tale, Elsa’s character kidnaps a small boy and gives him amnesia in order for him to forget his family. She brings him back to her castle and forces him to be her pet. Just like the original story Elsa was supposed to be an evil character in the Disney film, but it wasn’t until the music composers came up with the song “Let It Go” that Elsa was turned into the sympathetic older sister that we all know and love.

  1. The jungle book: -

The Jungle Book stole hearts everywhere with the song “Bare necessities.” The kid who had to pick between two homes, Mowgli showed that saying goodbye can be really difficult sometimes. It was heart-breaking, adorable, and an adventure, but in the original story things weren’t as happy and bright as they seemed in the movie. Mowgli wasn’t as accepted by the people as he hoped to be. When Mowgli makes his way back to live in the village, they instead banish him back into the jungle. Upset, Mowgli gets his animal friends to help him seek revenge and they end up destroying the entire village.

  1. The little mermaid: -

In the original story, The Little Mermaid, her sisters and the Prince are nothing like you would imagine in the movie. The original story is dark that included a murder and suicide. When Little Mermaid visits Ursula, the Sea Witch she strikes a deal, swapping her voice and tongue for legs. She will only survive if she wins over the affections of the Prince, but she doesn’t win the affections of the prince as he marries someone else. Heart-broken, Ariel is offered another ultimatum by Ursula, kill the prince and survive. But ariel doesn’t go through with the plan, she eventually dissolves into foam but her sprit floats in the sky. And Ariel’s sisters are not like the movie at all, they would brag about luring sailors to their death by drowning them in water. And the prince in the original story, described his love for Ariel as the love he would show for a little child.

Aren’t you happy that Walt Disney made a few tweaks to the storylines in Disney movies so that they would be stories with morals. Which one of these origin stories were you most surprised by?
