Two Boys And The Nut
Author : ANJALI WARIER
One day two boys, Ram and Shyam were strolling through the forest. Shyam spotted a hazelnut on the ground. Ram ran quickly to pick it up and he examined it. The hazelnut was much bigger than the usual size of a hazelnut. They both were awestruck seeing a hazelnut the size of pear. The boys thought that it was magical fruit and something magical would happen to them if they ate the nut.
Shyam said, “It is my nut because I was the first to see it. It is mine!” “No, it is mine because I was the first to pick it up” said Ram. They started quarrelling for a long time just for an ordinary hazelnut. Little did they know that a passer-by was listening to their quarrel. The passer-by was hungry too.
When he saw the two boys quarrelling he had a cunning idea to get hold of the hazelnut. He went to the boys and he said to the boys, “Give me the nut. I’ll settle the quarrel.” The passer-by took the nut and cracked it and separated into two parts. He gave one part of the shell to Ram and said, “This half is yours.” He gave the other part of the shell to Shyam and said, “This half is yours.” Then the passer-by quickly ate the fruit seed and said, “The remaining is mine for helping.”
With this the boys were fooled by the passer-by and did not get anything.
Message: When two persons quarrel, a third person always gains.
