 Awaiting Rains

Author : SHRIYANS CHANDAN MOHAPATRA

Within homes dealing with scorching heat, with extended times with air conditioning , I definitely crave for a change. Enough of ice creams, lemonades, milkshakes. When so many things are not under our control like going out , playing outside so on, the best option is to crave for something inevitable. If summer's here , can rains be too away, not at least in Mumbai, right ! So here I am standing near my window waiting for the drops of hope to fall. Rains have a different effect, I know some of us will disagree but to each its own. I love the monsoon and can't wait for it to start!

The first thing that comes to my mind is the petrichor ; the distinct smell of raindrops meeting the soil. This unusual fragrance uplifts the mood of the monsoon lovers. For me its a breath of positive vibes similar to me meeting my best friend after a long time. And then my run to the kitchen starts and my mood just gets elevated by all the aromas of bhajiyas, pakoras and what not! Each evening is a celebration as even a cup of hot milk in your hands as you sit near the rain-washed windows gives you the exact warmth of comfort; not too hot not too cold. And the icing on the cake is that book on your lap that grabs your attention amidst the pitter patter in the background. Nevertheless I have to mention the dose of cute struggles too. Closing and opening the windows as per the direction of the rain to avoid your rooms getting wet. There is no running away from laundry and drying them in every possible corner of the house on tables, chairs, hanging all over you. Its damp but doesn't participate in dampening my mood rather its darn funny! When I was small , me and mom would play the game of imagining the hanging clothes as alien guests and talk funnily with them. And yes the drying umbrellas in the living room used to be my little home inside home.

Monsoons always bring back fond memories. Today I might not go out to stamp in the puddles or play football in the rain but then monsoon has so many options for indoors that I am looking forward eagerly for the magnificent exuberance of the Mumbai Monsoons to make its grand entry. Any time now, friends! Any time.
