How plants survive during winters?

K AyushJan 08 2022

Hi everyone, my topic for today is something to think about. All of us are familiar with plant kingdom but this is much more than that. Today I am talking about plants' survival during winters.

It's difficult for plants to survive during winters as days are shorter and there is less sunlight. The cold temperature slows down their growth as the temperature drops below zero degrees, freezes the water, and makes it inaccessible to plants. Such conditions are sure to kill all plants if they do not have techniques for survival. Some plants enter a resting stage. Only perennial plants show new growth every year. This is why they are called perennial as they grow well irrespective of the climatic conditions. However, the part of each of these plants above the ground dies during the winter months. The underground parts of these plants ensure that they do not die and this way perennial plants survive till the spring season. One of the examples of underground storage organs is the bulb.

There is another variety called annual plants. In such plants, only the seeds survive during winters and they grow into new plants when spring comes. An example of an annual plant is the sunflower plant. Hope you have understood some amazing facts on how plants are able to grow during the winter season. I enjoyed writing on this topic as I am always fascinated by plants. I like to learn more about them. That is it for now! I'll come back next week with another interesting topic.
